The Location of this hotel is AWESOME!! The staff was very friendly! The rooms while they are not trendy or modern were very clean and comfortable! If you are going to Chicago just to spend your time inside a hotel room then this not the place for you!! The main lobby in the hotel was absolutely beautiful!! For the price and the location you can not beat the Congress Plaza Hotel!!

Great location is the only good thing I can say for the hotel. The non-smoking room reeked of old cigarettes. The toilet ran every time we used it. There was no internet service at the hotel for us to use. The ice and soda machines are not on every floor. Only pepsi products, which for coke lovers, does not make us happy. Towels were thin, and no hot water for an afternoon shower.

We stayed here for a week, when I first started looking at hotels I was concerned with the low review ratings for the Congress. I read one other review though that stated that the property was excellent if viewed for what it offered; I must say that I am glad I chanced the stay. From the moment we arrived the staff was pleasant and so very helpful. We did have to wait an hour for our room only for the fact we arrived early but they checked our bags allowing us time to start exploring. I suggest spending the extra to stay in one of the "Lake View" rooms, it was grand to start the day looking out the window at the lake and park. Nice to be within walking distance to most all attractions, we only took a cab to the museum of science and industry, the best of all places visited must see IMAX "HUBBLE" The hotel is older, but has much to offer that the new cookie cutter hotels do not; that being charm and a true touch of elegance. There were only two times I was disappointed with the hotel; the weight room was dirty and the equipment was not totally functional, and I do not suggest wasting the money on the breakfast buffet, over priced for the quality and selection of food items. Bottom line this will remain our hotel of choice every time we visit Chicago from now on.

I have stayed in many substandard hotels & hostels in Asia, Latin America, & Eastern Europe, but this one takes the cake. The workers have been on strike for many years. The elevators frequently breakdown. The staircases are very narrow and not properly lit or air conditioned, making the climb when the elevator goes out something like taking a pack mule up the Grand Canyon. The staff do not appear to have even limited English proficiency, making check-in a challenge. The shower drains clog quickly. The hotel bar lacks decent service or amenities. The beds are like cement blocks. However, the hotel is in a good location. Still, I cannot recommend this nightmare to any traveler.

It was 80 degrees outside and the hotel is so old that only the heat worked. There was no air conditioning and the windows only opened half an inch. All in all it was probably 120 degrees in the room. Did I mention there are no fans in the rooms either? The staff was no help either.
